The E Card is a valuable diagnostic tool for eye care professionals. It is useful in testing near vision - emulating users' vision with reading materials, computer screens, smart phones, and many other devices as well as screening for abnormal eye conditions. However, in order to be accurate and useful, a near card needs to be clean, clear, and in pristine condition. Gulden's Illuminated Near E Card and Illuminated Amsler Grid offer advantages over traditional near cards, providing the eye care professional with long-life, advantageous diagnostic tools.

The card is useful in quickly ruling in or out maculopathy when a patient presents with vision loss, preventing time-consuming and costly testing. The Near Card is also valuable in predicting post-operative visual acuity in eyes with cataracts - helping the eye care professional determine what portion of vision loss is a result of a cataract versus due to maculopathy. The card is useful in testing near vision and evaluating the macula in patients since one of the first signs of macular degeneration can be wavy, broken or distorted lines or a missing vision area, thus facilitating early detection of abnormal scotoma. The card helps in preoperative evaluation of patients about to undergo keratoplasty or cataract extraction since corneal opacities or cataracts often preclude visualization of macular details whereas the Amsler Grid is useful in assessing macular function.

Testing with both the Illuminated Near E Card and the Illuminated Amsler Grid can be performed in less than a minute, is easy for both staff and patient, and is simple and quick enough to be used as a routine diagnostic screening tool for all eye exams.

The card is indexed with numbers from 20/20 to 20/200 in nine increments with clearly identified indices that indicate the visual acuity level. Both devices are internally illuminated with a long-life LED source that standardizes illumination and eliminates reflections. The cards measure 7.8 x 5.6 x .4", with a 5.75 x 3.75" viewing area. Both are lightweight, provide a rubberized sure-grip frame, are powered by easily obtained standard AAA batteries or an AC power adapter, and are easy to clean and sanitize.
