12120 - Spielmann Occluder
Gulden Ophthalmics new Spielmann Occluder enables more accurate visual acuity and cover test procedures. It is a well known that patient performance during acuity testing is reduced by suppression due to retinal rivalry of the occluded eye.1,2 White occluders have been preferred over black to prevent this, but now an even better solution has been found in the Spielmann occulder. This new occluder uses a lightly frosted, scratch resistant lens that degrades the acuity of the non-tested eye while not inducing suppression effects. The reading eye is thus tested with an absolute minimum of interference from the fellow eye. The examiner is also able to see the non-tested eye through the frosting. This is important to see if the patient giving acuity results is “squinting” the fellow eye under the paddle. Likewise cover testing is made more reliable and informative because the examiner can see the movement of the covered as well as the un-covered eye. The handle is made of black, molded, strong, lightweight ABS plastic, with an easily cleaned gloss finish. The occluder portion is made of frosted acrylic. 1. Fuhr PS et al.
